GeoURL
The GeoURL site describes itself as:
A location-to-URL reverse directory. This will allow you to find URLs by their proximity to a given location. Find your neighbor's blog, perhaps, or the web page of the restaurants near you. GeoURL is listing 191,090 sites.
It's a very simple idea, that just associates a website with its physical location. For example, here are all some of the people listed on GeoURL who are physically near 3aims:
- Lionheart's Lair: Photography, Oxford (0.1 km N)
- deviantART: simonez (0.4 km W)
- Ducks and swans Oxford canal (0.5 km N)
- Inigo Surguy (0.6 km E)
Here are others near some people I know who use GeoURL:
- Jon Hicks (of Firefox logo fame amongst other projects)
If you are running Firefox you can use the GeoURL extension which provides quick access to geographic information for sites which support it.
You can add GeoURL tags to your HTML documents very easily:
- Find out your latitude and longditude.
If you are in the UK you can do this by visiting MultiMap and entering your postcode. If you scroll down to map information your latitude and longditude will be calculated. You will need the values in brakcets.
- Create your meta tags replacing 51.7516,-1.2708 with your latitude and longditude and add an appropriate title for your site.
<meta name="ICBM" content="51.7516,-1.2708" /> <meta name="DC.title" content="My title" />
- Put the meta tags you've just created in the <head> section of your HTML page and upload it to the server.
- Add your page to the directory by filling in the form at http://geourl.org/ping/.
If you are using Mozilla Firefox you can install the GeoURL extension. When you visit a site with the GeoURL meta tags a small icon will appear in the bottom left of your browser window. Clicking it will take you to the GeoURL site and show you other sites near the one you are visiting.
